The Northern Lights are symbolic to Aboriginal peoples and rightly so. They believe and teach that the lights are spirits of ancestors celebrating life, reminding us that we are all part of creation, and many believe they can summon the Aurora Borealis to converse with their relatives who have passed.
A few years ago, I was struggling with feeling blue and missing those who had been so special in my life but had passed far too early. I took a very meaningful and spiritual trip to Yellowknife. It was a solo trip as I was soul searching. I took a bus with Aurora Village Tours to join many others from around the world to spend the night just hoping we would catch a glimpse of the beautiful performance. Needing some space while I sorted through my feelings, I grabbed my chair and headed out into the -45 degree C weather, across a frozen lake in pitch black dark to let my heart reach out. That very first night I found what I was aching for. We were gifted with the lights and my heart spoke to those I lost. They reassured me with this beautiful display that we’re still in reach, my future is bright and yes…..some day we will be reunited. It was healing in a way I would never have imagined and helped me celebrate life again in all it’s different forms and feel re-connected.
I hope “Silent Celebration” is meaningful to you as well and is a reminder to observe and be grateful for all the amazing gifts nature and the great beyond gives us.
